Marijuana & Creativity: Is It Just a Myth?

For nearly four decades the debate has continued regarding the connection between marijuana & creativity. The majority of creatives (musicians, writers, artists) have used cannabis as a source of inspiration, yet scientific research continues to examine if this association is based upon psychology, biology, or culture.
Cannabis use often alters an individual’s perception & thought processes; this may cause them to think creatively.

Commonly reported creative benefits include:

  • An increased ability to associate ideas & thoughts
  • Improved concentration on the creation process (music, visual art, storytelling)
  • Lessened stress/relaxation which can reduce creative anxiety
  • More open to experimentally creating/imagining

While certain cannabinoids may activate areas of the brain that control mood & perception, this may allow for more “free” thinking or less self-criticism while working creatively.

Again, these responses to cannabis-induced creativity vary greatly among individuals. Low dose cannabis may aid some people in brainstorming ideas, while high doses may decrease their ability to concentrate/productively.

Environmental factors play a large part as well. Creativity is usually at its best when one feels comfortable & free from pressure. Cannabis may provide this environment for those using it.

It is also worth noting that creativity is a skill that requires experience, practice & talent. Most successful creatives believe that discipline is just as important as being inspired.
Growing interest in the area of cannabis & creativity is a reflection of the greater interest in how one’s mindset affects their artistic expression. Whether myth or measurable effect, the topic will continue to be examined by both creatives & researchers.
Why Does Some Weed Make Me Feel More Creative?

Creative effects of cannabis can be attributed to:

  • Moderate THC
  • Terpenes such as:
    – Limonene (mood booster)
    – Pinene (focus enhancer)
    – Terpinolene (energizing agent)

Together, these may contribute to the user’s ability to think more freely or make connections between ideas differently.
