Marijuana User Stereotypes: The Truth Behind Them

For many decades, marijuana users have been associated with popular stereotypes created through mass media and societal perceptions. For example, while many of these stereotypes were made famous in the pop culture of the time, they do not accurately reflect the realities of today’s society as we know it.
Many people believe that those who consume cannabis lack motivation or ambition. However, this belief could not be further from the truth. There are many individuals who consume cannabis from various professions and social levels.
Stereotypes about marijuana use – and what really goes on:
- All marijuana users are lazy. Most marijuana users hold jobs and engage in an active lifestyle.
- Those who use marijuana are irresponsible. With increasing numbers of adults using responsibly, there are fewer irresponsible users than before.
- Older people don’t use marijuana. Older adults are becoming one of the largest growing age demographics for marijuana users.
- Using marijuana will decrease your productivity. This depends on the dose, when you take the dose, and how your body reacts to the dose.
- Legalization of marijuana has shown us that marijuana users can be anything from a professional, parent, athlete, artist, or retiree.
The other misconception about the “culture” of marijuana use is that it is all the same. There are as many ways to use marijuana as there are people. Some people use marijuana socially, others use it to help with their health issues (wellness), and some use it to relax from time-to-time.
As our scientific knowledge of marijuana use grows, so does our knowledge of why each person reacts differently to marijuana use. People react differently due to biology, past experiences, and type of products used.
Why breaking down the stereotypes is so important:
Breaking down the stereotypes is important for several reasons. One reason is that the negative connotations surrounding marijuana use may inhibit open conversation regarding the importance of safe use, education, and responsible use. As societies continue to assess marijuana laws and regulations, the outdated views of marijuana users are slowly being replaced by a more realistic view of marijuana users.
Educating ourselves on the diversity of marijuana users is crucial to having a well-rounded and educated discussion on the topic of marijuana.
