Marijuana in Movies and Music: How Its Image Is Changing

Marijuana in movies and music has been visually represented since the 1970s, but its portrayal has changed over time and may look very different from how it looked before. Once used primarily as a rebellious or humorous representation of marijuana use; marijuana use is now depicted as an important aspect of lifestyle, wellness and creativity.
Older films showed marijuana use by exaggerating the behaviors of the user and most classic comedies associated marijuana use with laziness and/or irresponsibility. The entertainment industry’s depiction of marijuana has shifted to reflect changing public perceptions about marijuana and broader legalization debates.
There are five noticeable differences in the way marijuana users are being depicted in modern media:
The majority of marijuana users in modern media are portrayed as professionals, artists and entrepreneurs. Story lines regarding marijuana use are centered around the individual’s right to choose their own path and no longer focused solely on the consequences of illegal activity. Many musicians have openly discussed the use of marijuana as a means to relax or enhance their creative process. The frequency of stories regarding the medical benefits of marijuana and the use of marijuana as part of wellness activities are increasing.
Music has had an enormous influence on the evolution of public perception of marijuana. From Hip-Hop and Reggae to Pop and Indie music, many artists are now openly discussing marijuana without the same stigma they would have faced years ago. In fact, transparency is now more prevalent then ever.
Streaming services and Independent Filmmakers have also contributed to the evolving image of marijuana use. Many writers and filmmakers are now depicting marijuana use in more realistic social context (social situations, stress relief, self-expression) versus using stereotypes.
As more countries legalize marijuana, people are becoming more accustomed to responsible marijuana use. As society continues to evolve, entertainment will continue to reflect these changes and the evolving image of marijuana will represent a broader societal trend toward normalization. Marijuana is no longer just a tool for shock value; it is now a symbol of individual choice, creativity and evolving social acceptance.
